Meet Sandy and Howard Vander Griend

Sandy and Howard Vander Griend

Howard and Sandy

Meet Sandy and Howard Vander Griend, missionaries with Mission to the World working in Lethbridge as partner’s with Amazing Grace Community Church. They are very excited to begin this work alongside Rohan and Rebecca Crown, Jack and Margaret Phillips, and other short-term volunteers who come up to Lethbridge.

Moving to Lethbridge last week helps to rack up another address change for them – their friends and family know to only keep their address written in pencil in address books. They have lived in 3 different countries, 8 different states or provinces, and had 18 different mailing addresses – without even being in the military, just job changes and “itchy feet”, along a willingness to go where God leads them.

After their wedding in 1981 they finished schooling in Michigan and then served a 2.5 year term in Nigeria as missionaries where Howard was a pilot with Christian Reformed World Missions. They returned to the states in 1988 and completed their family of 3 children.  They have been very involved in their local church where ever they lived; Howard has been an elder in 4 different denominations and Sandy has taught Sunday School and led VBS for many years. They homeschooled their children and have a great relationship with all of them. All of their children, Becky and John Pearce, Michael and Holly Vander Griend, and Julie Vander Griend, along with their grand-children Mary Kate (11), Carson (7), Emily (4), Charlee Marie (3) and Finn (1) currently live in Chattanooga, Tennessee and attend the same church, Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Sandy loves to sew and craft and read and usually has several projects that she is involved in around the home.  Howard keeps busy (and Sandy happy) by building her stuff around the home and also just building her a whole house occassionally.  They have built 3 of their homes from the ground up and completely remodeled most of the others they have lived in.  Howard also enjoys reading, walking, and playing golf.  Together they go to the YMCA 5 days a week to keep their moving parts moving, go for rides on Howard’s motorcycle, play games of all sorts, and enjoy watching Star Trek and other action movies.

Fun facts:

Favorite restaurant: TACO BELL – since there aren’t any here, we will make it ourselves and ask you to join us!

Favorite movie: WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING or any STAR TREK/LORD OF THE RINGS movie!

Favorite foods: French Fries (Sandy),  Rice and Hamburger smothered in ketchup and sugar  (Howard)

Favorite book: THE WALKING DRUM by Louis Lamour (Sandy),

Baby Bottle Collection for Lethbridge Pregnancy Care Centre

We’re collecting baby bottles for the Lethbridge Pregnancy Care Centre.

Having these basic supplies on hand helps to reinforce the message that assistance and care is available for those experiencing unexpected pregnancies. Knowing that support is accessible can go a long way to helping an expectant mother choose to continue an unplanned pregnancy.

Every donation helps!
